Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has increased in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha 8 or better begins exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A sequence of betting follows in which gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of wagering happens. After all the players have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of betting happens and then the river card is flipped. The gamblers will have to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where some entrants get confused. Unlike Texas Hold 'Em, where the board can be every player's hand, in Omaha hi/low the player must use exactly three cards from the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of everyone's, it doesn't matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It's the identical concept in almost every poker game.

The low hand is more complex, but really opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don't count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don't count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there's no low hand available, the high hand takes the complete pot.

While it seems complex at first, following a few hands you will be able to pick up on the fundamental nuances of the game with ease. Since you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at once, Omaha High-Low offers an overwhelming range of wagering choices and seeing that you have many individuals shooting for the high, as well as several shooting for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is worth your time to participate in Omaha/8.
