Phil Ivey has been branded as the best poker contender in the world by most of the top-ranked pros. He was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to Jersey before his first birthday. His papa introduced him to one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was hooked on poker and wanted to discover anything he could about the game. Phil routinely told his grandparents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. He didn't allow the detrimental feedback from other people destroy his ambition of being one of the strongest poker players in the world.

He began competing intently after acquiring a false ID with the name of Jerome. He honed his abilities at the casinos of Atlantic City. The beginning number of years for Phil were a teaching period and coming away with a win was not a common thing at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 WSOP when he achieved 2 final tables and came away with his first World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the last table he destroyed quite a few of the well known pros including but not limited to "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

Phil made a decision to take his skills to the successive level and moved out west to Las Vegas. Phil continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Ivey credits his success to discipline and an immeasurable passion for the game of poker. He says that he's learning every day and is very humble about his success. He knows he makes blunders every single session of poker and always strives to get better.

Although Phil has come first in some big-time tournaments, he likes destroying money games on a normal basis.
