Howard Lederer lived in a family of five in which he enjoyed taking part in different card games when he was young. He found himself getting very aggressive in the above-mentioned card games as he was playing his father. After graduating from secondary school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a little bit and moved to New York City to compete in some big-time chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard's 1st two years were difficult as he would play countless hours and lose a majority of the time. He made some additional cash by being an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he could boost his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to get more rest and focus more on the game.

The real advancement in his abilities happened when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would frequently wager against one another. Howard had access into some of the greatest players in chess. With their help, he would hone his cunning thinking skills. He used these strategy ideas in the game of No-Limit texas hold'em.

Howard Lederer also helped his sister Annie Duke master poker. Annie Duke was an excellent student of the game as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the correct decision. Howard told Annie Duke to head out to Las Vegas and play in the WSOP tournaments. Annie is one of the strongest women players the poker world today. He moved to Sin City in 1993 and played money games for the following decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, Howard made the decision to play more tournaments.
