Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complex but favored poker games. It's a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has increased in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha 8 or better starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of wagering follows where players can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. Another round of wagering happens. After all the players have either called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. a further round of wagering happens at which point the river card is flipped. The players will need to put together the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a few players get baffled. Contrasted to Texas Hold 'Em, in which the board can be everyone's hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player has to use exactly 3 cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It's the strongest possible hand out of every player's, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same notion in almost all poker games.

A low hand is more complicated, but really opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don't count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand available, the high hand takes the whole pot.

It may seem complicated initially, after a couple of hands you will be agile enough to get the basic subtleties of the game easily enough. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha/8 offers an amazing assortment of betting options and because you have several players battling for the high, as well as a few battling for the low. If you prefer a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is worth your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
