Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complicated but favored poker variations. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant game, has expanded in popularity so quickly.

Omaha hi/lo begins like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of wagering follows in which players can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. One more sequence of wagering happens. Once all the gamblers have either called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. a further round of wagering ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to put together the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of players can get baffled. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can make up everyone's hand, in Omaha hi low the player must use exactly three cards from the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It's the strongest possible hand out of every player's, it doesn't matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It's the same notion in nearly all poker games.

The low hand is more complicated, but really opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there's no lower hand presented, the higher hand wins the complete pot.

It may seem difficult initially, following a few hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental nuances of play easily enough. Since you have people wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are being used at once, Omaha 8 or better provides an overwhelming collection of betting choices and owing to the fact that you have several players shooting for the high hand, as well as a few trying for the low hand. If you prefer a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is worth your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
