Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 in which he enjoyed gambling on various card games when he was young. He earned some additional money by being an assistant for the poker players. He judged he possibly could better his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to acquire more sleep and concentrate even more on the game.

The actual advancement in his skills began when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best gamblers would often play against each other. Howard was able to access a few of the greatest minds in chess. With their help, he would sharpen his strategic thinking techniques. Howard applied these strategy concepts to the game of No-Limit texas hold'em.

He also helped his sister Annie Duke master poker. Annie was a great student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper choice. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to head out to Vegas and play in the WSOP competition. Annie Duke is one of the best women players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard Lederer moved to Las Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and competed in money games for the following decade.
